About EightiesVault

EightiesVault is a free, privacy-first online emulator for Nintendo's classic handhelds: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. The whole emulator runs inside your browser through WebAssembly — there is nothing to install, no extension to enable, no account to create. Open the page, load a ROM you legally own, and press start.

Unlike many retro gaming sites, EightiesVault never uploads, stores or distributes copyrighted games. Your ROM file stays on your device for the duration of the session and is discarded the moment you close the tab. The page is built for the retro community: collectors who want to revisit the classics on a modern screen, modders, and homebrew developers testing their own creations.

Supported Consoles

Three generations of Nintendo handhelds are currently supported, covering more than a decade of portable gaming history:

Game Boy (1989)

The original 8-bit handheld powered by a Sharp LR35902 CPU and a 4-shade green monochrome LCD. EightiesVault accepts .gb ROM files. Notable titles include Tetris, Super Mario Land, and the original Pokémon Red/Blue.

Game Boy Color (1998)

A backwards-compatible upgrade with a colour LCD and double the CPU clock. Accepts .gbc files as well as the older .gb format. Highlights from this era include Pokémon Crystal, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and Wario Land 3.

Game Boy Advance (2001)

A leap forward in horsepower: a 32-bit ARM7TDMI CPU, 96 KB of VRAM and hardware-accelerated 2D backgrounds. Accepts .gba ROMs. Notable titles include Metroid Fusion, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Features & Capabilities

Every modern emulator convenience, available with zero setup:

  • Save states — freeze the game at any frame and resume later, ideal for tough sections or speedrunning practice.
  • Fast-forward — hold Space to skip slow text crawls and grinding sections.
  • Battery saves persist — your in-game saves are kept between sessions and can be exported as files.
  • Gamepad support — USB and Bluetooth controllers are auto-detected, including Xbox, PlayStation, 8BitDo and SNES-style pads.
  • Customisable controls — every key and button is remappable in the settings menu.
  • Fullscreen and screenshot — clean capture for sharing your runs.
  • Multilingual interface — English, French and Portuguese, switchable on the fly.
  • Mobile-friendly — runs on iOS Safari and Android Chrome with touch overlays.

Where to find legal ROMs & homebrew

EightiesVault does not host or link to copyrighted ROMs. To play, you'll need a ROM file from one of these legitimate sources:

  • Free homebrew — sites like pdroms.de and itch.io host hundreds of original games made for Game Boy and GBA, all free to download legally.
  • Your own cartridges — using a hardware dumper such as the GB Operator or Open Source Cartridge Reader, you can extract ROM and save data from cartridges you physically own.
  • Official re-releases — services such as Nintendo Switch Online include classic Game Boy and GBA games legally, though those are not playable here.

We strongly recommend exploring the homebrew scene first. There are genuinely excellent original games released in the past few years — full RPGs, platformers and puzzle games made by enthusiasts — that you have probably never heard of and that run beautifully on this emulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is using a Game Boy or GBA emulator legal?

Emulators themselves are legal in most jurisdictions, including the United States and the European Union. What matters is the ROM: playing a copy of a game you legally own (typically dumped from a cartridge you possess) or freely distributed homebrew is fine. Downloading copyrighted ROMs you do not own is copyright infringement. EightiesVault does not host, link to, or distribute any copyrighted ROMs.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The emulator runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. There is nothing to download, no extensions or plugins, and no account is required.

Are my ROMs uploaded anywhere?

No. Your ROM file is processed locally by your browser. It is never sent to any server. Closing the tab clears the file from memory.

Can I use a USB or Bluetooth controller?

Yes. Any standard USB or Bluetooth gamepad supported by your browser is auto-detected, including Xbox, PlayStation, 8BitDo and generic SNES-style controllers. Configure mappings via the settings menu in the emulator toolbar.

Will my in-game saves be kept between sessions?

Yes. Battery saves and save states are stored in your browser. You can also export them as files to back them up or move them between devices.

What ROM file formats are supported?

The emulator accepts .gb, .gbc, and .gba files, as well as .zip archives containing a single ROM. The console is auto-detected from the file extension.

Does it work on mobile phones?

Yes. The emulator runs on iOS Safari, Android Chrome and other modern mobile browsers. Touch controls appear automatically on devices without a physical keyboard.
